Greene County trail back open, after vandals closed it

DEC ANNOUNCES OPENING OF NEW REROUTE ON DEVIL’S PATH/LONG PATH TRAIL

Safe Visitor Passage Created after Recent Trail Vandalism

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced the opening of a new reroute for a portion of the Devil’s Path and Long Path trails in the town of Hunter, Greene County. A quarter-mile section of this trail closed in early October after the vandalism of steel rungs on a rock face created a safety hazard for visitors.

The short reroute on the previously closed section between Twin Mountain Peak and Pecoy Notch Trail provides safe passage for visitors while maintaining the character of the Devil’s Path. DEC plans to monitor the reroute to ensure there is no significant environmental degradation resulting from public use in this area. For more information about Devil’s Path in DEC’s Indian Head Wilderness, go to DEC’s website.

DEC’s vandalism investigation is ongoing. To report vandalism on state lands, contact DEC at 1-844-DEC-ECOS (1-844-332-3267).
